Breastplate Gems - A November Excerpt

It's getting closer to midway through November and it's about time for an excerpt from our one year devotional book Breastplate Gems (paperback).   That's also available in ebook format,  Breastplate Gems (Kindle). The book sales will help us finance a mission trip to Latin America, which may turn into a move onto the missionfield.

What's more important is what the devotional can do for you, the reader. It's easy to find devotionals that are full of "feel good" thoughts.  Those are good, but they don't necessarily give us tools to protect our souls. Our goal was to allow God to feed us content that might make us feel good, but definitely strengthen our faith.  With the holidays rapidly approaching, this would be a great gift for almost anyone.

Today's post is one example from the November chapter.  The prayer thought is just that -- a starting point for your own prayer, based on the devotional principle.

Matthew 5:38-42 (KJV) Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.  And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.  And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.  Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

We could take the beginning of this and and determine it’s talking about forgiveness.  Or we could look at the second half and assume that it speaks of being charitable.  James 2:17 tells us, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.”.  At the same time, Hebrews 10:24 says, “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:”.  And, yes, the original Greek word for works is the same in both verses, but Hebrews has the key.

Until we latch onto God’s love, forgiveness and charity can only come out as works of our flesh. But, once we’ve laid hold of God’s love and appropriated it for ourselves, it will grow to a point that we can’t contain it.  That’s when there is real forgiveness and charity.  Because the foundation is God’s love.  100% perfect.  100% guaranteed to satisfy.

Prayer thoughts for the day:  We need God to fill us with His love and help us to allow it to grow to a point where we fully forgive and fully bless, as a result.
