Be of the Same Mind

1Corinthians 1:10   Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

In recent posts, we’ve spoken about unity,  teamwork, and hearing that “certain sound”.  What’s really nice is getting to watch that all mix together and actually happen in practice.  Take a look at what I mean.

I mentioned in my last post that I had attended what was described as a leadership conference.  With good 20/20 hindsight, that description fits only if we use John Maxwell’s definition of leadership – that leadership is influencing others and we all influence someone.  Simply put, the conference had lots of good teaching, usable by anyone following Christ.

As the conference progressed, the unity and the teamwork in the congregation were abundantly evident.  Thank you, Quentin Road Bible Baptist Church for that.  And, as I attended the various sessions, it was so nice to hear the “certain sound” that I recognized from the ministry I’m a part of.  It may have been discussed in a little different style than I’m used to, but I see that as just another way God was making sure I paid attention.  The Truth that was shared and how it was understood were exactly the same.  That “same mind” mentioned in our starting verse.

The word in the original greek for “same” is autos.  In many of the verses where it’s used, it speaks of “self”.  It strikes me that when God speaks of unity and what I was discussing about teamwork, those thoughts are taken to a whole new level in this word.  The Body of Christ isn’t just unified, doesn’t just work together, aren’t just in agreement.  When we’re one in Christ, His thoughts are our thoughts and each part of the Body echoes the rest.  The word used here for “mind” is nous.  That term encompasses the mind, emotions, thoughts, and thought processes.  And that’s where it gets exciting!

When we’re of the same mind, the Body of Christ starts with the same premise, uses the same thought processes, the things that influence the thought processes are the same, and the conclusions are the same.  On earth, we all have sin natures that prevent that from being a perfect experience now.  But we can grow closer to that perfection of thought and love through the Word and through Body Life.  Wow!

During my conference trip I got to see a glimmer of the results of that growth.  I didn’t know that my head pastor would be away at the same time I was.  He had a high school football reunion in New York state.  Along with that, he met with some of our pastors in the area where he was going.  He decided that a little small town street evangelism might be fun for them.

I was 640 miles away (750 by car), with my conference friends, going to meet one of our pastors and some of his church members for breakfast in Barrington, IL.  When we got to Barrington, they were having a sidewalk sale and Pastor Harry and his crew hadn’t arrived yet.  So, we wandered around, checking out some of the various tables that were set up.  And we got to talk to a few people about the area, their churches, and their relationships with Christ.  Small town street evangelism.  And a second group of people displaying the same mind.  And drawing others to the mind of Christ.

There’s a special oneness and a special joy when we are of the same mind and that mind is the mind of Christ.  What experiences have you had of that special oneness?  And, if you haven’t experienced that yet, what are you doing to find it?
